The project "SEN(N)OU" is a project that I started a year ago to help Japanese people develop a global perspective on the history of World War II, truly discover their Japanese identity, and become responsible global citizens. By sharing various stories and interpretations of history with Japanese students and faculty, we are spreading the importance of examining history and the history that we as Japanese people need to know.
In all matters, not just history, we should not blindly accept information given at face value; the “facts” change depending on the speaker’s biases and ways of thinking. I want to spread awareness of this and continue learning, accepting, and questioning different stories and different interpretations.
The project website provides access to World War II history education from around the world, with a particular focus on Singapore’s World War II history. So far, SEN(N)OU has held four classes on Singapore’s war history and taught them to over 100 Japanese students and teachers.
“History isn’t what happened.
It’s who tells the story.”
